David Litwack
Chairman of the Board

David Litwack is best known as the founder of PowerSoft and brings more than 25 years of technology leadership to mValent’s board. Most recently he held senior executive positions at Novell (NOVL) where he was responsible for the development and advancement of the company’s identity-driven computing strategy. Litwack joined Novell in 2002 following its acquisition of SilverStream Software, where he served as president and CEO since 1997. Prior to joining SilverStream, he served as executive vice president at Sybase following the company’s acquisition of PowerSoft Corporation in 1995. Litwack was founder and president of PowerSoft, where he drove the client/server revolution with PowerBuilder, one of the most popular development tools of all time. He is a graduate of Brandeis University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, and holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Boston University.


David Barrett
Polaris Venture Partners

Dave Barrett is a general partner with Polaris Venture Partners, focusing on investment opportunities in information technology, including particular interests in software, internet, ecommerce and physical security technologies.

Dave joined the venture capital world after a 22-year operating career. As director, chief operating officer, senior vice president and general manager for four publicly-held software and services category leaders during their periods of highest growth, he built and led teams which achieved dominant market share and enterprise value. His executive leadership experiences included consistent successes in development of operating teams, product development and revenue engines, as well as over 20 acquisitions/mergers.

Prior to joining Polaris, through March 2000, Dave served as chief operating officer of Calico Commerce. During his tenure, the company evolved from venture-backed startup to a $45M revenue, publicly-held corporation. Calico was one of the top-performing Initial Public Offerings of 1999 and the 6th most successful offering in the history of NASDAQ.

Earlier in his career, Dave served as senior vice president of worldwide operations for Pure Atria Software Corporation; a $150 million revenue market leader in software development automation, continuing in that role after the company was acquired by Rational Software Corporation for $1 billion in 1997. Dave also had a long career with with Lotus Development Corporation, a $1 billion revenue pioneer in enterprise software. Among many executive roles, he served as vice president of field sales and services.

Dave represents Polaris on the boards of 170 Systems, Confluence, Dataupia, Imprivata, Integrian, LogMeIn, and mValent, and is a past board member of Centra Software (NASDAQ: CTRA) and Archivas (acquired by Hitachi Data Systems). He serves on the Microsoft Venture Capital Advisory Board and on the Dana-Farber CancerInstitute Leadership Council.

Dave holds a B.S. from The University of Rhode Island.


Joe Forgione
President and Chief Executive Officer, mValent

Joe has over 20 years of experience in the software industry both as an executive leading early stage companies and driving new initiatives in major software companies. Prior to joining mValent, Forgione was Vice President of Solutions for Novell where he was responsible for Global Solutions Creation and Marketing. Forgione also served as President and CEO of content management leader Eprise, a company that he took public. Prior, Forgione held a number of positions at Lotus, now part of IBM, including Vice President and GM of Notes solutions. Earlier, Forgione co-founded HyperDesk, an object-oriented tools company and held various marketing management positions at Data General. Joe has a BS in Electrical Engineering from MIT and an MS in Management from MIT Sloan School.


Chip Hazard
Flybridge Capital Partners

Chip is a General Partner at Flybridge Capital Partners whose investment interests and experience are in the information technology sector with a focus on enterprise software.

He currently represents the firm on the boards of 1-800-FREE411 (Jingle Networks), First Best Systems Infobright, mValent, Placemark Investments, Reveal Imaging, and SupplyScape and was previously a director at Bowstreet, which was acquired by IBM.

Before joining the firm in May 2002, Chip was a General Partner with Greylock Partners, a leading venture capital firm he joined in 1994. While at Greylock, Chip led or participated in numerous successful investments in the enterprise information technology field including Narrative Communications (acquired by @Home), Idiom Technologies (acquired by SDL), iPhrase Technologies (acquired by IBM), IBA (acquired by ServiceSoft/Kana), Storage Networks (IPO), Totality (acquired by MCI) and the Vincam Group (IPO in 1996, acquired by ADP). Prior to Greylock, he was with Company Assistance Limited, an investment and consulting firm in Warsaw Poland; and Bain and Company, an international management consulting firm.

Chip received a BA with honors from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School where he was a Baker Scholar and a Ford Scholar.

Swapnil Shah
Founder & Chief Strategy Officer, mValent

For the last 15 years, Swapnil Shah has been founding and leading infrastructure software vendors into innovative markets. Prior to launching mValent, Swapnil was the General Manager of the Wireless Division at Inktomi, a leading network infrastructure software company. Swapnil joined Inktomi in 1999 when it acquired Webspective, a venture-backed server management and content distribution software company that Swapnil founded. Prior to founding Webspective in 1996, Swapnil was co-founder and Director of Product Management at Open Environment Corporation, a multi-platform middleware company, which went public in 1995 and was later acquired by Borland. Swapnil has a BS in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University.
