Summary: In its new 2006 survey of large-enterprise IT executives, automated configuration management software company mValent found that 73 percent of large enterprises regularly experience application downtime due to application infrastructure failure. Additionally, nearly one-quarter of the 120 respondents said it takes at least one business day to manually correct a configuration error. These results are symptomatic of a problem that costs large enterprises billions of dollars each year in lost productivity and business disruption.

“Manual configuration management causes problems for businesses,” said Enterprise Management Associates Senior Analyst Andi Mann. “We estimate that more than 60 percent of service impact is due to configuration problems. A number of factors are driving interest in automated application configuration management, including Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), risk mitigation, security, growing complexity, scalability and compliance. mValent’s survey certainly validates what we are seeing in the market.”

The mValent survey reveals two factors driving the epidemic of configuration-related application outages: complexity of application infrastructure and compliance requirements. Additional key findings in the survey include:

  • One-third of large-enterprise IT organizations have 15 or more people making more than 100 configuration changes to applications every week. Each of these changes represents an opportunity for a configuration problem.
  • Configuration changes are made across a multitude of different vendor products, interfaces and tools, which adds to complexity and the likelihood for human error.
  • 72 percent of respondents report compliance requirements have compounded their application configuration management challenges, with Sarbanes-Oxley as the No. 1 compliance driver.
  • 39 percent of companies plan to adopt ITIL best practices as a means to improve productivity and increase efficiency, and to reduce the impact of application infrastructure complexity.
